Getting Started

1. Seek out neighbors interested in starting Neighborhood Watch group.

2. Contact local police agency and ask for Crime Prevention unit. Ask if they help with Neighborhood Watch.

3. Make invitations and distribute them door-to-door.

4. Set up a meeting with neighbors, even if police aren't involved.

5. Ask police where to find necessary materials, including Neighborhood Watch street sign.

6. Ask police for crime prevention tips. Obtain crime statistics for your area.

7. Select captain and co-captain(s) in separate homes.

8. Make map of neighborhood and provide copies for all participants. 

9. Make telephone tree, Facebook group, or blog for alerting residents about crimes and other problems. 

10. Develop emergency preparedness plan for neighborhood.

11. Participate in National Night Out every August to stay up-to-date and connected.

12. Update maps and contacts at least once every year.
